Sudanese Government and Rebel Groups Agree to Cease Hostilities Immediately

Sudan Proposes Humanitarian Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict

A proposed humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan is set to take place, following reports of genocide and ethnic cleansing by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in the city of el-Fasher. The international community has long advocated for such ceasefires as a means to alleviate civilian suffering and potentially end conflicts.

The RSF’s actions in el-Fasher have resulted in significant humanitarian concerns, with the city being largely emptied of its population. In light of this, the proposed ceasefire aims to provide a temporary reprieve from hostilities.

However, some experts are questioning the timing and motivations behind the proposal. Humanitarian organisations have been operating in Sudan, including Darfur, despite security complexities and without a formal ceasefire agreement. The question remains as to why a ceasefire is being pushed forward at this particular moment.

The proposed ceasefire has raised concerns about its potential impact on Sudan’s geographic, social, and political unity. In the past, humanitarian ceasefires have sometimes been used as a precursor to fragmentation and secession. Examples include Western Sahara, Libya, Somalia, Yemen, and South Sudan.

In the current situation, two parties claim to represent “the government” within Sudan: the legitimate government of Sudan and the RSF seeking to establish a parallel entity. Negotiation between these two entities is unprecedented in Sudan and could potentially lead to a violation of the core principles of unity and sovereignty.

The international community will closely monitor the proposed ceasefire and its potential consequences for Sudan’s stability and unity.
