Sudanese Troops Killed in Cross-Border Incursion, Chad Closes Border with Sudan

Chad Closes Eastern Border with Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

The government of Chad has announced that it will maintain its eastern border closure with Sudan until further notice, citing repeated violations by warring parties in the conflict-ridden country. The decision comes after clashes between paramilitary forces and militia fighters in the border town of Tina resulted in the deaths of five Chadian soldiers and three civilians.

According to a statement from the Chadian government, the border closure aims to prevent any potential spread of the conflict into its territory, protect citizens and refugee populations, and ensure national stability. Exceptions may be made for humanitarian purposes with prior approval from the government.

The conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has periodically spilled over into Chadian territory, causing casualties and property damage. Chad hosts nearly a million refugees from Sudan, who are affected by the ongoing civil war.

A border guard officer confirmed that five soldiers were killed in the clashes and stated that additional security measures are needed to protect civilians on the Chadian side. More Chadian troops have been deployed to the area, according to two sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The SAF and RSF did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The conflict in Sudan has resulted in significant human suffering, with tens of thousands killed and 11 million displaced, according to the United Nations.
