Sudan’s Prime Minister Outlines Government’s Vision for Peace and Rebuilding

Kamil Idris, Prime Minister of Sudan, recently presented his government’s vision for peace in Sudan at the United Nations Security Council. The presentation was part of a national effort to address the ongoing conflict in the country.

According to Idris, the Hope Government initiative aims to bring an end to the war, rebuild the nation, and restore civilian rule. The initiative calls for a comprehensive ceasefire under joint supervision by international and regional institutions, as well as the assembly of rebel militias in agreed locations.

The plan also includes facilitating the voluntary return of displaced people and refugees to their regions, accompanied by humanitarian aid to those in need. Additionally, the initiative proposes a model of transitional justice that balances forgiveness and reconciliation while ensuring accountability for war crimes.

Idris emphasized the importance of a peaceful transfer of power, which will be achieved through a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue focused on governance, peaceful transfer of power, and the country’s place among advanced nations. The government is committed to preserving Sudan’s unity and protecting its sovereignty.

The conflict in Sudan began on April 13, 2023, when the Rapid Support Forces militia violated army traditions and laws, leading to a series of events that have resulted in significant human suffering and economic losses. Major regional support has been a key factor in the ongoing war, which has lasted for over three years.

Idris expressed disappointment with recent international meetings, such as the Berlin conference, which were held without the participation of the Sudanese government and civilian stakeholders. He emphasized that his government remains open to a serious peace that preserves Sudan’s unity, protects its army, and heals the wounds of its people.

The Hope Government initiative is a national effort that brings together various stakeholders to address the country’s challenges. The government promises to work towards rebuilding Sudan and compensating the victims of war, provided that those who have harmed the Sudanese people stop harming them and are willing to contribute to the nation’s reconstruction.
