Sudanese Paramilitaries Launch Attack on South Kordofan City
A recent attack by Sudanese paramilitaries, specifically the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allies in the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement–North, has resulted in significant loss of life. According to reports from the Sudan Doctors Network, at least 14 people have been killed, including five children and two women, as a result of shelling in the city of Dilling.
The attack, which lasted for several hours, also left at least 23 others wounded, with seven of those injured being children. The military has stated that it successfully fended off the attack on the capital of South Kordofan province.
The Sudan Doctors Network has warned of a potential “catastrophic scenario” similar to one experienced in the Darfur city of el-Fasher, where an RSF invasion resulted in widespread violence and loss of life. In October 2023, the RSF invaded el-Fasher, leading to reports of intense violence that bore “hallmarks of genocide”. The UN Human Rights Office reported over 6,000 people killed during this three-day period.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF began in mid-April 2023, resulting in a humanitarian crisis with over 12 million displaced and more than 33 million in need of aid. Over 40,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict, according to UN figures. The International Criminal Court is investigating allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by both sides.
Recent fighting has centered on Darfur and the Kordofan region, with daily reports of deadly drone strikes resulting in over 500 civilian casualties as of mid-March.
