Al Jazeera Arabic Investigation Uncovers Leaked Audio Recordings of Syrian Military Officers Discussing Coordination with Israel
An investigative programme by Al Jazeera has obtained over 74 hours of leaked audio recordings and hundreds of pages of documents, which are set to be broadcast on Wednesday evening. The recordings feature prominent military officers in the regime of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad discussing plans and efforts to destabilize Syria.
The investigation reveals attempts by these officers, including brigadier-general Suheil al-Hassan, commander of the Quwwat al-Nimr (Tiger Forces), an elite unit in the former regime’s army, to regroup, gather funding, and secure weapons. The leaked conversations also implicate al-Assad’s high-ranking officers in coordination with Israel.
According to one recording, a source assures al-Hassan of Israeli backing, stating that “The State of Israel, with all its capabilities, will stand with you.” Al-Hassan is heard responding, “And I have dangerous intelligence information.” Another former brigadier-general, Ghiath Dalla, appears in the recordings and validates al-Hassan’s position as a representative of the regime’s traditional strongholds.
The investigation also captures al-Hassan expressing disdain for current developments, referred to as “the flood.” The full extent of the plot will be detailed in an upcoming episode of Al-Mutahari, hosted by Jamal el-Maliki. Parts of the leaks are airing on Al Jazeera’s platforms on Wednesday, with the complete investigation scheduled for release in mid-January.
The recordings and documents obtained by the investigation provide new insights into the efforts of former regime officials to undermine stability in Syria following the ousting of al-Assad. The details of the plot will be revealed in the upcoming episode of The Investigator.
