Syrian President al-Sharaa to Meet SDF Leader Abdi After Ceasefire Deal

Syrian Democratic Forces Agree to Ceasefire Amid Talks with Syrian Government

A truce has been reached between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after days of fighting, bringing an end to clashes in the north of the country. The agreement was announced on Sunday by SDF leader Mazloum Abdi, who accepted a ceasefire declared by President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The meeting between al-Sharaa and Abdi is scheduled for Monday, following a postponement due to bad weather. The talks come after Syrian government forces regained control of large areas in the northeast, forcing the SDF to accept the truce.

Abdi stated that the conflict was imposed on the SDF and planned by several parties. He announced his intention to outline the terms of the agreement after returning from Damascus. The SDF commander also acknowledged heavy losses suffered by the group but vowed to defend its gains.

The Syrian presidency has confirmed that the ceasefire guarantees the integration of SDF fighters into state institutions and the deployment of government authorities to key cities. Al-Sharaa called on tribal forces to allow for the implementation of the agreement.

US envoy Tom Barrack met with al-Sharaa in Damascus, stating that the agreement marked a turning point towards renewed dialogue and cooperation towards a unified Syria. The US has maintained forces in northern Syria, focusing on combating any resurgence of ISIL (ISIS) in the area.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also discussed the latest developments with al-Sharaa, expressing support for Damascus and emphasizing the need for the complete elimination of terrorism from Syrian territory.
