Taiwan to maintain free way of life despite external pressures

Taiwan’s President Reiterates Commitment to Democracy and Sovereignty

Taiwan’s President William Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed the island’s stance on its sovereignty and democratic values, stating that it will not compromise under pressure. In a social media post on Sunday, Lai emphasized that Taiwan will maintain its national sovereignty and dignity, as well as its democratic system of government.

Lai also highlighted Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining the status quo across the Taiwan Strait, rather than seeking to change it. He attributed regional instability to China, which considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and has pledged reunification by force if necessary.

The comments follow a recent statement from US President Donald Trump, who expressed his opposition to Taiwanese independence during a summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping earlier in the week. Trump stated that he was not looking to have someone go independent, referring to Taiwan.

Xi Jinping also emphasized the importance of resolving the Taiwan issue, warning that mishandling it could lead to conflict between the US and China. The US has provided military aid to Taiwan in recent years, which Lai described as a key element in maintaining regional stability.

Lai’s statement comes amid ongoing tensions between Taiwan and China, with Beijing viewing Taiwan as a part of its territory. The US has not officially recognized Taiwan’s sovereignty, but has maintained a policy of strategic ambiguity towards the island.
