Taiwan President William Lai Ching-te Visits Eswatini, Signs Trade Agreements
President William Lai Ching-te of Taiwan arrived in Eswatini on Saturday after a series of diplomatic arrangements were made by his government’s teams. According to a Facebook post by the president, he was greeted with a military-style welcoming ceremony upon arrival.
During his visit, President Lai met with King Mswati III and signed trade agreements. The trip was originally scheduled for late April but was delayed due to flight permit cancellations for his charter plane. Taiwan’s presidential office stated that these cancellations were made after heavy pressure from Beijing, citing economic coercion as the reason.
The move has been described by China as a “laughable stunt” and claimed that President Lai used a foreign plane to evade detection. However, Taiwan operates as a self-governing democracy and maintains diplomatic relations with several countries, including Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, and the Vatican.
Eswatini is the only African country that still recognizes Taiwan, despite China’s efforts to isolate it diplomatically. The United States has pledged to help Taipei defend itself under the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, while China continues to pressure countries to sever formal ties with Taipei.
President Lai expressed gratitude to King Mswati III for standing by Taiwan “undeterred by various diplomatic and economic pressures”. He reiterated that no country has the right to prevent Taiwan from contributing to the world.
