Kimi Antonelli Wins Canadian Grand Prix, Extends Championship Lead
Italian driver Kimi Antonelli secured his fourth consecutive victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing over 10 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The 19-year-old’s win marked a significant milestone in his season, as he now leads the championship standings by 43 points.
Antonelli’s victory came after a heated sprint race on Saturday, where Mercedes teammate George Russell suffered an engine failure, giving Antonelli a clear path to the finish. In post-race comments, Antonelli described the battle with Russell as “a really fun fight” and expressed disappointment for his rival’s misfortune.
Russell, who had taken the lead in the championship standings after winning the season-opening race in Australia, suffered a setback on Sunday. Despite starting from pole position and taking the sprint race, he was forced to retire due to engine failure. Russell later stated that he wished he had more time to battle Antonelli, saying “40 more laps” would have been ideal.
The win marked a contrasting day for Hamilton, who finished second behind Antonelli. The seven-time world champion expressed relief and satisfaction with his performance, stating it was an “amazing feeling” to finally find his team’s “sweet spot”.
In the constructors’ standings, Mercedes leads Ferrari by 72 points, while McLaren are third with 106 points.
