Thailand to Hold Election in 2026, Main Parties and Polls to Be Announced

Thailand to Hold Snap Polls on February 8

A vote is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 8, in Thailand, where approximately 53 million people out of a total population of 71 million are eligible to participate. The election will determine the composition of the 500-seat House of Representatives.

The two main parties competing in the polls are Bhumjaithai, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and the People’s Party. Bhumjaithai is backed by Thailand’s royalist conservative establishment, while the People’s Party is a progressive youth-led party that has emerged as the successor to a group that won the last election but was blocked from power.

The snap polls will be held under a mixed system, with 400 constituency seats elected through a first-past-the-post system and 100 seats allocated through proportional representation or on a party-list basis. The newly elected lower house will then select the next prime minister, who requires 251 votes to take office.

Voters will receive three ballot papers: two for the parliamentary election and one for a referendum on whether to rewrite the constitution. Polling stations are expected to open at 8am and close at 5pm local time. Vote counting is anticipated to begin shortly after, with results likely to be announced as tallies are completed.

The snap polls come amid deep political uncertainty in Thailand, following border clashes that killed 149 people between Thailand and Cambodia. The country has cycled through three prime ministers in as many years, and the vote on Sunday will test whether Thailand’s long-running cycle of coups, protests, and court interventions can be broken.
