Thousands Evacuate After Failing Chemical Tank Leaks in Southern California

Emergency Response Underway in Orange County, California

A storage tank containing hazardous chemicals at GKN Aerospace in Garden Grove has prompted an evacuation order for approximately 40,000 residents in Southern California. The tank, which holds up to 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate, a highly flammable chemical used in plastics production, began to fail on Friday evening.

According to Orange County Fire Authority Division Chief Craig Covey, the tank’s contents could either rupture and spill onto the ground or explode. If it ruptures, firefighters can neutralize the vapors and mitigate the plume, but if it explodes, the situation would be more hazardous.

Firefighters were able to reduce the tank’s temperature from a safe distance, buying crews more time to stabilize the situation. Garden Grove Police Chief Amir El-Farra reported that over 4,000 people refused to evacuate, while local mayor Stephanie Klopfenstein urged those still in the area to leave immediately due to the seriousness of the situation.

The evacuation order has resulted in the closure of over a dozen schools, with officials warning that the duration of the order is uncertain. Residents are advised to follow the instructions of emergency responders and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
