Thousands March in Turkey to Support Gaza on New Years Day

Thousands of protesters gathered in Istanbul’s city center on Thursday to demonstrate their support for Gaza. The event took place after morning prayers at several prominent mosques, including Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque and Sultanahmet Mosque. According to Sinem Koseoglu, a correspondent for Al Jazeera, the demonstration was organized by various groups, including football clubs.

Koseoglu reported that the protesters called for an end to the conflict in Gaza, with many displaying Turkish and Palestinian flags at the mosques. The event drew a substantial crowd, despite freezing temperatures. Authorities implemented security measures, providing hot refreshments to participants.

The protest began after morning prayers and proceeded towards the Galata Bridge, where ministers, senior officials, and state dignitaries were present. The official program started at 8:30am local time (05:30 GMT). A similar demonstration took place in Istanbul last year, organized by Bilal Erdogan, son of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The issue of Gaza has garnered support across Turkey’s political spectrum, with demonstrations taking place at mosques and other public spaces. Football clubs have also encouraged their supporters to participate in the event. The protest was part of a broader effort to show solidarity with Palestine.
