Brazilian Cities Celebrate President’s Re-Election Victory
Thousands of Brazilians took to the streets on Sunday to celebrate President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s re-election victory. The crowds, dressed in green, yellow, and red, filled city centers in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
In both cities, supporters of President Lula displayed flags and banners, with some using vuvuzelas to create a festive atmosphere. In Rio de Janeiro, the beachfront and central avenues were filled with people singing campaign songs and chanting slogans.
Meanwhile, in Sao Paulo, thousands of people gathered in central squares and major roads, waving red banners and setting off flares. The scenes were reminiscent of football title celebrations.
According to official results, President Lula secured 51.8 percent of the vote, while his far-right rival Senator Flavio Bolsonaro received 48.2 percent. The president’s campaign team hailed the high turnout as a demonstration of Brazilians’ commitment to democracy.
Despite some controversy surrounding the election, with Senator Bolsonaro refusing to accept the result, President Lula’s supporters were jubilant. The president himself described the outcome as a “victory for defending democracy”.
