Kosovo Court Convicts Three Ethnic Serbs on Terrorism Charges
A court in Pristina, Kosovo, has sentenced three ethnic Serbs to life imprisonment and a 30-year jail term for their roles in a deadly attack near the country’s northern border in 2023. The Basic Court found Blagoje Spasojevic and Vladimir Tolic guilty of terrorism charges, while Dusan Maksimovic was convicted of the same charge.
According to Judge Ngadhnjim Arrni, the defendants were involved in a well-organised plan that used violence with heavy weaponry to attempt to cut off the northern part of Kosovo inhabited predominantly by Serbs and attach it to Serbia. Spasojevic, one of the defendants, denied being a terrorist during the trial.
Milan Radoicic, a Kosovo Serb businessman and politician, was identified in drone footage as the leader of the attack. He publicly admitted to leading the incident after being charged with 45 people initially involved in the armed incident. The trial was held for just three defendants who were already in custody.
Kosovo has accused Serbia of involvement in the attack, while Serbia denies any involvement and claims that the men acted on their own. Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia have been ongoing since Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Some 50,000 Serbs living in northern Kosovo do not recognise Pristina’s institutions and see Belgrade as their capital.
In 1999, a conflict broke out in Kosovo that resulted in the deaths of over 10,000 people. The incident occurred when ethnic Albanian separatists launched a rebellion against Serbia’s rule.
