Three UK men arrested on suspicion of spying for Chinese authorities

Three men suspected of spying for China have been arrested by British police, according to local media reports. The Metropolitan Police confirmed on Wednesday that three individuals had allegedly assisted a foreign intelligence service in violation of the country’s National Security Act of 2023.

The suspects include a 39-year-old man from London, a 68-year-old man from Powys, Wales, and a 43-year-old man from Pontyclun, Wales. The police did not disclose the identities of those detained, pending charges.

Labour lawmaker Joani Reid’s husband, David Taylor, was reportedly among those arrested. In response to the news, Ms. Reid released a statement saying she had “never seen anything” that suggested her husband had broken any laws. She stated that she and her children were not involved in his business activities and had never been to China.

China has condemned the alleged espionage cases, calling them an attempt to “fabricate facts and concoct so-called ’espionage cases’ to maliciously slander China”. The Chinese embassy in London lodged a protest with British officials. Security Minister Dan Jarvis expressed concern over the increasing pattern of covert activity from Chinese state-linked actors targeting UK democracy.

The arrests come amid strained relations between China and the United Kingdom, following years of spying accusations. Last November, MI5 warned lawmakers about Chinese agents attempting to recruit them through cover companies or LinkedIn. The incident may cast a shadow on Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s efforts to improve relations with Beijing, which was previously criticized for prioritizing economic interests over security risks.
