Tiger Woods Declines 2027 Ryder Cup Captaincy Amid Health Concerns

Tiger Woods Granted Permission to Leave US for Inpatient Treatment Facility

A Florida judge, Martin County Court Judge Darren Steele, has granted a request by Tiger Woods’ lawyer, Douglas Duncan, to allow the 15-time major winner to leave the United States and enter an inpatient treatment facility. The motion cited Woods’ need for an “intensive, highly individualized and medically integrated program” away from media and public scrutiny.

According to court records, Woods faces misdemeanor driving under the influence charges related to a rollover crash in Jupiter, Florida, last Friday. He was released on Tuesday with a plea of not guilty and announced his intention to step away from golf to seek treatment for health reasons.

Woods’ lawyer stated that the out-of-country treatment facility recommendation is based on Woods’ complex clinical presentation and the urgent need for a level of care that cannot be safely or effectively provided within the United States. The motion also noted that ongoing medical scrutiny and public exposure create significant barriers to his care, which would result in setbacks and an inability to fully engage in treatment.

The PGA of America has announced that Woods has removed himself from consideration to serve as the US captain for the 2027 Ryder Cup. In a statement, the organization expressed support for Woods’ decision to prioritize his health and well-being.

Woods was arrested on Friday after a rollover crash involving his Land Rover, which clipped a truck in front of him. He told police he was looking at his mobile phone and changing the radio station before the incident. A breathalyzer test showed no signs of alcohol, but Woods refused to take a urinalysis test for other drugs.

In another incident, Woods was arrested on May 2017 on a DUI charge in Jupiter Island and pleaded guilty to reckless driving. He received one year of probation, a $250 fine, and 50 hours of community service.

Woods’ treatment plan is expected to be completed at an undisclosed location outside the United States.
