Israeli Authorities Confirm Captives Released from Gaza
A ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas has led to the return of several captives held in Gaza. According to Israeli authorities, all remaining captives have been accounted for after receiving the remains of police officer Ran Gvili. This development marks a key component of the ceasefire agreement.
In October 2023, Palestinian fighters carried out an attack on communities across southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the capture of 251 Israeli and foreign captives. Following this incident, Hamas released several captives, including two Israeli-American individuals and two elderly captives. In November, a deal was reached between Israel and Hamas, leading to the release of 81 Israeli women and children and 24 foreign captives.
Subsequent events have included the deaths of three Israeli captives in December 2023, as well as the recovery of several captives by Israeli forces in February and June. In July, a report by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights found that Israel was holding approximately 9,400 Palestinians as “security detainees” without providing clear reasons for their detention.
In August, the discovery of six dead Israeli captives in a Hamas tunnel sparked anger in Israel and pressure on the government to secure the release of remaining captives. A video released in December 2023 showed several Israeli security force members allegedly engaging in abuse against a Palestinian detainee at the Sde Teiman detention facility.
In January, a ceasefire deal was reached for the release of 33 Israeli captives. The agreement also included an increase in humanitarian aid entering Gaza and the release of 240 Palestinian women and teenage detainees held by Israel without charge.
