Train Crash Near Machu Picchu Kills Driver, Injures Dozens of Passengers

Train Collision at Machu Picchu Site Claims Conductor’s Life, Injures Dozens

A collision between two trains on the rail line serving Peru’s archaeological site of Machu Picchu has resulted in the death of a conductor and injured dozens of people. According to authorities, the incident occurred around lunchtime on the single track that connects the town of Ollantaytambo with the famous Inca citadel.

The PeruRail train, operated by one company, collided with another locomotive belonging to Inca Rail. The deceased was identified as the conductor of the PeruRail train. A health official reported that approximately 20 people were in relatively serious condition following the accident.

Images posted on social media showed the damaged locomotives facing each other on the track, broken glass scattered around, and injured individuals being treated on the sides of the tracks. A response team consisting of a dozen ambulances and medical personnel was dispatched to the remote Andean area without direct road access.

Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, attracts an average of 4,500 visitors daily, with many foreigners among them. The site, built in the 15th century by the Incas, features perfectly fitting stone bricks and served as a sanctuary for the nation’s emperors.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
