Treasury Secretary Doesnt Rule Out Future Federal Reserve Lawsuits

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Testifies Before Senate Committee on Interest Rate Policy

On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent appeared before the Senate’s Financial Stability Oversight Council to address concerns about President Donald Trump’s campaign to slash interest rates. The hearing drew scrutiny from Democrats over rising consumer prices and concerns about Trump’s attempts to influence the Federal Reserve.

During the session, Senator Elizabeth Warren questioned Bessent about a report in The Wall Street Journal that indicated Trump joked about suing his nominee for the Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, if he failed to comply with presidential demands. When asked whether Trump would sue Warsh or investigate him by the Department of Justice if he didn’t cut interest rates as desired, Bessent replied that such decisions are up to the president.

Trump had previously announced Warsh as his pick to replace Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who has faced criticism over his decision to lower interest rates gradually. Trump has repeatedly demanded that interest rates be lowered to “one percent and maybe lower than that”. The current federal interest rate is around 3.6 percent.

Experts warn that a sudden drop in the interest rate could trigger a short-term market surge, but also risk driving down the value of the dollar and leading to higher prices in the long term. Traditionally, the Federal Reserve operates as an independent agency, making monetary decisions without political interference.

The hearing comes amid concerns about Trump’s efforts to influence the Federal Reserve, including his attempts to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and open a criminal investigation into Powell. The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the case against Cook.
