A New Trial Set to Examine Maradona’s Death
A trial is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, marking a new chapter in the investigation into the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona. The trial will focus on determining whether Maradona’s medical team was responsible for his death in November 2020.
Maradona died at the age of 60 while recovering from brain surgery at a private residence. The cause of death was attributed to heart failure and acute pulmonary edema, a condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs. Seven members of Maradona’s medical team were initially charged with negligent homicide, but their trial was halted two and a half months into proceedings due to allegations of judicial misconduct.
The original trial was annulled in May 2025 after it emerged that one of the judges overseeing the case had breached judicial rules by appearing in a documentary. The judge, Julieta Makintach, was later impeached. The medical team’s defense maintains that Maradona died of natural causes, while prosecutors argue that their treatment was grossly negligent.
The new trial is expected to last until July and will hear from approximately 120 witnesses. It is unclear at this time whether the outcome of the trial will differ from the original verdict.
