US-Iran Diplomatic Efforts Stall Amid Rising Oil Prices
The United States and Iran have failed to make progress in their diplomatic efforts, with each side accusing the other of making unreasonable demands. The stalemate has led to a continued escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in rising oil prices.
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to end the conflict without explanation. This move came after the US had floated an offer earlier in the week aimed at reopening negotiations. Iran responded by releasing a statement focused on ending the war on all fronts, particularly in Lebanon.
The international benchmark Brent crude rose 2.69 percent to $104.01 per barrel, driven by Trump’s comments and ongoing tensions in the region. Tehran’s proposal included ending the naval blockade and lifting US and international sanctions, while preserving Iran’s control over its nuclear program and foreign policy.
Trump described Iran’s response as “totally unacceptable”, while Iranian state media characterized the US plan as a form of “surrender to Trump’s greed”. The United Arab Emirates reported intercepting two drones coming from Iran on Sunday, while Qatar condemned a drone attack in its waters on a cargo ship originating from Abu Dhabi. Kuwait also reported dealing with hostile drones that entered its airspace.
The conflict has now entered its 73rd day, with diplomatic efforts remaining stalled.
