US and Israel Claim Victory in Conflict with Iran, While Tehran Prepares for Economic Toll
Tehran has formally responded to the US 15-point plan to end the conflict with Iran, asserting its “natural and legal right” over the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-affiliated Tasnim news agency cited an “informed source” as saying that Iran had sent its official response to the proposal on Wednesday night.
According to the report, Iran’s conditions for ending the conflict include an end to “aggressive acts of assassination”, compensation and war reparations, and a halt to hostilities from all resistance groups involved. The Tasnim report appears to contradict US President Donald Trump’s claim that Iran is “begging to make a deal”.
Trump stated during a cabinet meeting at the White House that the US had “completely” wiped out Iran’s navy and air force, calling Iranians “lousy fighters, but great negotiators”. He also claimed that the US was “way ahead of schedule” in the conflict.
Meanwhile, Iranian lawmakers are reportedly seeking to pass legislation to collect tolls for transiting ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a critical waterway through which a fifth of global oil supplies pass, and its closure has led to fuel shortages spreading worldwide.
US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff stated that there were “signs” Iran was seeking an “off-ramp”, but also claimed that Tehran was stalling talks. Pakistan has been acting as a mediator in the conflict, according to Witkoff.
The economic and humanitarian toll of the conflict continues to mount, with fuel shortages and rising costs affecting companies and countries worldwide. US Vice President JD Vance echoed Trump’s claims, stating that Iran’s conventional military had been “effectively destroyed” during the war.
