Trump considers using Insurrection Act to quell Minneapolis unrest

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to consider invoking a federal law that would allow for the deployment of troops to Minnesota, where protests have been ongoing following two shootings involving federal agents in Minneapolis.
The incidents occurred within a week of each other and involve Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. On Wednesday, an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Good, a US citizen, in her car. The Trump administration had previously described her as a “domestic terrorist.” A separate incident on Tuesday involved a federal agent being shot and wounded by two people wielding a shovel and broom handle.
The situation has led to widespread protests and tensions in Minneapolis. Mayor Jacob Frey has described the situation as unsustainable, stating that the city is trying to find a way forward while keeping residents safe. The police force remains responsible for day-to-day operations, but federal agents have been deployed to assist with immigration enforcement.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made over 2,000 arrests in Minnesota since early December and claims not to back down. However, DHS has accused local officials of encouraging resistance to ICE with “hateful rhetoric.” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara has urged protesters to disperse, warning that further escalation would be undesirable.
The US President has previously threatened to use the Insurrection Act to deploy troops or federalize the National Guard for domestic law enforcement. The Minnesota Governor and local officials have expressed concerns about this plan, citing the potential impact on public safety and order.
