Trump Criticizes German Economy Minister Over Iran Policy Disagreement

US President Donald Trump has made comments on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, suggesting he should focus on domestic issues rather than commenting on the conflict in Iran. Trump stated that Merz’s criticism of the war on Iran was “totally ineffective” and that he should prioritize ending the war with Russia/Ukraine and addressing immigration and energy issues.

In response to Trump’s comments, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that Berlin is prepared for the possibility of fewer US troops in Germany. Wadephul stated that Berlin is discussing the issue closely with NATO bodies and expects decisions from the Americans.

The rift between the US and Germany over Iran has widened, with Merz questioning Washington’s strategy in the conflict. Merz suggested that the Trump administration is being “humiliated” by Tehran’s negotiating tactics and its refusal to engage in direct talks before meeting certain conditions.

Trump scolded Merz for his comments, saying he “doesn’t know what he’s talking about”. Berlin has tried to walk back Merz’s comments, with Wadephul stating that the chancellor was referring to Iran’s “bad behaviour” in the talks.

Germany is one of the top military suppliers to Israel, and Berlin has been cracking down on Palestinian rights activism at home. The US president has expressed increased skepticism towards NATO over its refusal to directly participate in the war against Iran or help to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The US administration is considering scaling back the number of US troops in Germany, with Washington’s military presence seen as the center of its security umbrella over Europe. Berlin has emphasized the importance of NATO cooperation and expects decisions from the Americans on this matter.
