Trump Deploys 5,000 Troops to Poland for Military Exercise

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. The move was made public through a post on Trump’s Truth Social platform.

According to reports, the announcement comes days after the Pentagon cancelled the deployment of approximately 4,000 troops to Poland as part of a broader reduction in US forces in Europe. However, it appears that the new deployment may be a reversal of an earlier decision.

The Pentagon had previously halted the deployment of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Cavalry Division, a Texas-based unit of over 4,000 troops, which was preparing to rotate into Poland and Eastern Europe. Trump later questioned Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about why the deployment was cancelled.

Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has welcomed the announcement, stating that it is “a vital pillar of security for every Polish home and for all of Europe”. Other officials, including Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, have also expressed support for the move.

The US currently hosts around 10,000 troops in Poland, largely on a rotational basis. The country has become an important military partner for the United States since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In 2020, Poland and the US signed the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, which expanded military cooperation and formalized a longer-term American military presence in the country.

The White House and Pentagon have released few details about the latest deployment, including whether the additional troops will be redeployed from elsewhere in Europe or if they are the same soldiers whose deployment was previously cancelled.
