US President Donald Trump Confirms Review of Iran’s 14-Point Peace Plan
In a statement made on Saturday in Florida, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he has been briefed on Iran’s 14-point proposal to end the ongoing conflict between the two countries. The plan, which was announced earlier this year, calls for the lifting of the US naval blockade, war reparations, and the release of all frozen assets.
Trump stated that the US is “doing very well” in its efforts to negotiate a settlement with Iran, citing the country’s economic struggles as a result of months of conflict and a naval blockade. He also mentioned that Iran has expressed a desire for a peaceful resolution due to its dire financial situation.
However, Trump warned that there is a possibility of renewed hostilities if Iran “misbehaves” during the negotiations. When asked about the potential for strikes to resume, Trump replied that it was possible, but did not provide further details.
The 14-point plan, which includes a 30-day window for finalizing the terms of the peace agreement, has been met with skepticism by some observers due to its timeline being at odds with Washington’s preference. The diplomatic push comes amid a fragile three-week truce that has put a pause on the US-Israel war on Iran.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated on Saturday that it remains on “full standby” for a return to hostilities, citing the US’s lack of commitment to previous treaties. Tensions have been further complicated by Trump’s recent comments about the US naval blockade, which were seized upon by Tehran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a “damning admission of piracy”.
The impasse is also complicated by technical obstacles to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including the presence of Iranian sea mines, and a growing rift with NATO allies following Trump’s decision to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany.
