US President Donald Trump Announces Cabinet Changes
President Trump has announced that Kristi Noem will be replaced as Secretary of Homeland Security, effective March 31. Noem, who served in this role since January 2021, will instead serve as a special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a newly created security initiative.
Noem’s removal from her position follows a two-day congressional hearing on Capitol Hill, during which she faced questioning about her actions from members of both parties. Trump has nominated Senator Markwayne Mullin to replace her.
Noem previously served as Secretary of Homeland Security under Trump’s administration, overseeing immigration enforcement operations and disaster response efforts. She also supervised the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Trump announced Noem’s reassignment in a post on his Truth Social account, praising her tenure and stating that she has had “numerous and spectacular results” in her previous role. He also stated that Noem will be reassigned to the newly created role as special envoy for the Shield of the Americas.
Mullin, a Republican Senator from Oklahoma, was nominated by Trump to lead the Department of Homeland Security. The announcement comes after controversy surrounding a $220m border security advertising campaign featuring Noem on horseback.
