Trump Imposes New Tariffs Following Supreme Court Ruling

US Imposes New Tariffs on Imported Goods Amid Ongoing Trade Policy Shift

The United States has implemented a new tariff regime on imported goods, effective Tuesday, as part of President Donald Trump’s efforts to rebuild his trade agenda following a recent court ruling. The tariffs, which range from 10% to 15%, apply to all goods not exempted by previous agreements.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court struck down most of Trump’s previous tariff regime, citing concerns over the president’s authority in imposing sudden tariffs on individual countries. In response, Trump announced a new temporary global tariff of 10% and later increased it to 15%. The move has added to confusion surrounding US trade policy.

The new duty is set to last for 150 days unless extended by Congress. It was imposed under the 1977 law cited by Trump as a means to address the country’s balance-of-payments deficits, which range from $1.2 trillion annually to 4% of gross domestic product.

Beijing has urged the US to abandon its unilateral tariffs, indicating willingness to hold another round of trade talks with China. Japan has also requested that Washington ensure favorable treatment under the new tariff regime, while maintaining a commitment to implementing a previously struck trade deal.

The implementation of the new tariffs began at midnight on Tuesday, while collection of tariffs annulled by the Supreme Court was halted. The move is seen as a bridge towards a more durable trade policy.
