US President Donald Trump Returns from China Trip with Unclear Outcomes
President Trump departed China after a three-day visit, during which he touted several broad trade deals but made little progress on key issues related to Taiwan and the US-Israeli war in Iran. The trip marked Trump’s first visit of his second term, featuring a range of high-profile events, including a private tour of a former imperial garden and a military honour guard.
Upon departure from China, Trump stated that he had discussed Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who expressed opposition to the island’s independence. Trump clarified that he made no commitment on US arms sales to Taiwan, an issue supported by the US Congress but opposed by Beijing. The US provides billions of dollars in military aid to Taiwan, which it acknowledges but does not endorse.
Trump also spoke about his discussions with Xi regarding the US-Israeli war and the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that he was not seeking any favours on Iran, although some administration officials have called for China’s leverage over Tehran to be used to break a deadlock in ceasefire negotiations.
The White House announced little progress on key issues during Trump’s departure. Trump highlighted several trade deals, including a potential purchase of 200 jets from Boeing, which would mark the first such deal in over a decade. However, further details were not immediately released.
Chinese officials also characterized the visit as successful, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi stating that China encourages negotiations between the US and Iran to resolve their differences.
