Trump Nominates Todd Blanche for Attorney General Position

President Donald Trump has nominated Todd Blanche, his former personal lawyer, to officially take over as attorney general, the top law enforcement position in the United States. Blanche currently serves as acting attorney general and will assume the role permanently if confirmed by the Senate.

Blanche’s nomination could potentially extend the interim period beyond 210 days, as specified in the Federal Vacancies Reform Act. The act generally limits temporary leaders to this timeframe.

Blanche has faced controversy over his handling of the Epstein files and statements about January 6. He was part of Trump’s defense team during the trial of former adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who was accused of attempting to conceal hush-money payments through illegal means. Blanche remained in Trump’s orbit after the trial and joined his second administration.

As deputy attorney general, Blanche has been involved in some of the Justice Department’s most high-profile moments, including an interview with convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell about her investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. The interview was widely seen as an attempt to defuse criticism.

Blanche will face a Senate confirmation hearing, which is expected to be contentious. He previously testified before the Senate in 2023 and was confirmed as deputy attorney general on a party-line vote of 52-46.

The nomination sets up a potential showdown between Blanche’s supporters and critics, who have raised concerns about his ability to lead the Department of Justice. The department is responsible for investigations, prosecutions, and the federal prison system, among other duties.
