Trump Objects to Iraqi Politicians Comeback Bid

Iraq’s Political Crisis Deepens Amidst Leadership Dispute

A prolonged political stalemate has gripped Iraq since November’s general elections, with no government yet formed. The majority coalition in parliament has nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as its candidate to assume the role once more. However, this decision has sparked strong opposition from US President Donald Trump.

The US stance on al-Maliki has further polarized Iraq’s political landscape. The reasons behind Washington’s resistance to his candidacy remain unclear. Al-Maliki served as Prime Minister from 2006 to 2014 and was a key figure in the country’s post-Saddam Hussein era.

Ahmed Rushdi, President of the House of Iraqi Expertise Foundation, notes that al-Maliki’s return to power could have significant implications for Iraq’s relations with its neighbors. Muhanad Seloom, Assistant Professor of International Politics at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, suggests that the US has a vested interest in shaping Iraq’s political landscape due to its historical and strategic ties to the country.

Kenneth Katzman, Senior Fellow at The Soufan Center, observes that the US continues to play an active role in Iraq’s politics. He notes that Washington’s stance on al-Maliki reflects its broader concerns about regional stability and security. As the situation in Iraq remains uncertain, it is unclear how the crisis will be resolved or what implications it may have for the country’s future.
