US President Hosts Nine-Hour Prayer Event on National Mall
A nine-hour prayer event was held on the National Mall in Washington, DC, as part of the US administration’s efforts to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary. The event, titled “Rededicate 250: A National Jubilee of Prayer, Praise and Thanksgiving,” took place from 9am to 6pm Eastern US time (13:00 to 22:00 GMT) on Sunday.
The event featured a range of performers, pastors, civil rights leaders, and Trump’s Republican allies, including Senator Tim Scott. The organisers aimed to mark “rededication of our country as One Nation to God.” Members of the Trump administration, including President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, recorded video messages that were broadcast from the stage.
Trump’s video message featured him reciting a speech from the Book of Chronicles, while Rubio described the US as a country uniquely shaped by the “Christian idea.” The event also included performances by various artists and speakers.
The event drew criticism from some quarters, with only one non-Christian speaker present. Some religious leaders rejected the event as a political stunt, rather than a sincere testament to faith. Paul Raushenbush, a reverend and president of the Interfaith Alliance, expressed concerns that the event blurred the separation between church and state.
The Trump administration has faced criticism for its handling of issues related to religion and government. The President has accused the federal government of “anti-Christian bias” and launched a task force to root out purported discrimination. A recent survey found a slight increase in the number of US adults who believe Christianity should be named as the country’s official religion.
The event was attended by various figures, including Trump’s allies and civil rights leaders. The organisers aimed to promote unity and faith among Americans.
