US President Donald Trump Posts Photo of US Flag Over Iran Amid Ongoing Talks
Washington, DC - President Donald Trump has posted a photo on Truth Social featuring the United States flag covering the map of Iran, accompanied by the question: “United States of the Middle East?” The post was made on Saturday as part of ongoing negotiations for a more lasting ceasefire in the US-Israeli war with Iran.
The message carries potential implications for regional allies and foes alike, given Washington’s past interventions in the Middle East. Trump has previously stated that the US is not seeking a prolonged occupation of Iran, but rather welcomes regime change as a byproduct of the military campaign.
According to Vali Nasr, professor of international affairs and Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University, Trump’s post could have implications for ongoing negotiations aimed at a more lasting ceasefire. Nasr pointed to an earlier statement from Trump that an “entire civilization will die” if Iran did not agree to a deal, which was followed by a pause in fighting.
On Saturday, both US and Iranian officials indicated a new deal may be within reach. The White House has declined to comment on the post or its implications for ongoing talks. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that an update could be coming shortly, while Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said the two sides were “currently working to finalise” a memorandum of understanding.
Despite the progress reported by officials, key sticking points in the standoff remain unresolved, including the future of Iran’s nuclear programme and its influence over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump regularly uses his Truth Social account to make announcements and post messages on foreign policy issues.
