Trump Requests Historic $1.5 Trillion for Military Funding in Budget Proposal

US President Donald Trump has submitted a budget request that includes a nearly 40% increase in military spending over last year, totaling $1.5 trillion. The proposal, released on Friday, outlines the White House’s priorities, with a focus on defense and law enforcement.

The budget request is expected to be subject to lengthy congressional negotiations. According to the document, the increased spending will “advance President Trump’s delivery of peace through strength by reinvesting in the foundations of American military power.” The proposal includes $455 billion in additional funding over fiscal year 2026.

In contrast, domestic programs are slated for cuts, including initiatives aimed at addressing climate change and promoting renewable energy. Funding for refugee resettlement and aid programs is also expected to be reduced. Instead, funds will be allocated to build Trump’s Golden Dome missile defense system, invest in critical minerals, boost US shipbuilding, and increase salaries for US troops.

The budget outline includes a proposed $73 billion in cuts to domestic programs. This reduction affects initiatives aimed at ensuring equality and access in housing, education, and healthcare. Funding for Medicaid and Medicare will also be shifted to the states.

Critics have expressed concerns that the move could lead to inconsistent funding and potential shortages. The White House has stated its intention to bolster several of Trump’s other priorities, including continued funding for the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The budget request is separate from an emergency request of $200 billion submitted by the Trump administration to support the US-Israeli war with Iran. The proposal also includes a 13% increase for the Department of Justice and a $10 billion fund within the National Park Service for beautification projects in Washington, DC.
