US President Sets Deadline for Iran to Open Strait of Hormuz
United States President Donald Trump has announced a deadline for Iran to agree to a proposal that could potentially ease tensions between the two countries. The proposal, which includes clauses for an end to conflicts in the region, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and lifting of sanctions, was put forward by Pakistan on Monday.
Trump stated that the proposal is “significant” but not enough to alleviate his threat to destroy infrastructure unless Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz. The US president has set a Tuesday deadline for Iran to agree to the proposal, warning that any failure to do so would result in strikes on Iran’s power plants and bridges.
The Strait of Hormuz, which links the Gulf to the Indian Ocean, is a critical waterway that handles approximately 20% of the world’s oil supplies. Iran has been accused of restricting access to the strait, leading to a surge in oil prices and economic instability.
Iran’s state-run news agency reported that Tehran had conveyed its response to Pakistan via Islamabad, rejecting the proposed truce and calling for a permanent end to hostilities. The Iranian government stated that it would only accept an end to the war with guarantees that it would not be attacked again.
The White House confirmed that the ceasefire proposal was under consideration but Trump had “not signed off” on it. The US president has warned that he is “highly unlikely” to postpone the deadline, stating that Iran has had sufficient time to respond.
Separately, Israel launched a strike on an Iranian petrochemical plant in Asaluyeh, killing two commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The attack appeared to be separate from Trump’s threats and deadline.
