US President Donald Trump has stated that his administration intends to “de-escalate” the situation in Minnesota following the recent killings of two United States citizens, including intensive care nurse Alex Pretti. The incident occurred on Saturday when Pretti was shot and killed by Border Patrol officers while filming them with his phone.
Pretti’s death, along with that of Renee Good, has led to widespread protests and a standoff between state and federal officials. Top Trump officials, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, are facing criticism for their response to the incident.
President Trump expressed confidence in Noem despite calls for her resignation. Noem had previously accused Pretti of engaging in “domestic terrorism” and suggested that he had brandished his weapon at Border Patrol agents during an altercation. However, preliminary video evidence has shown that Pretti did not take out his weapon at any time before being shot and killed.
A CBP official informed Congress on Tuesday that two federal officers fired shots during the killing of Pretti. According to the notice sent to Congress, officers tried to take Pretti into custody and he resisted, leading to a struggle. During the struggle, a Border Patrol agent yelled, “He’s got a gun!” multiple times.
The incident has sparked controversy over how Trump officials responded to the situation. Noem’s characterization of events has been criticized for conflicting with preliminary video evidence. The CBP official’s statement provides further details on the circumstances surrounding Pretti’s death.
