US Midterm Elections to Take Place on November 5, Following Trump’s Claims of Election Irregularities
Washington, DC – The upcoming midterm elections will mark the first major US election since President Donald Trump took office. The midterms are expected to determine whether the Republican Party maintains control over both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
President Trump has been vocal about his concerns regarding voting administration in the United States. He has claimed without evidence that his 2020 presidential election loss was due to malfeasance. In preparation for the midterms, Trump’s approach appears to be twofold, according to Michael Traugott, a political scientist and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan.
On one hand, Trump is conducting a messaging campaign to cast doubt on unfavorable results. On the other hand, he is also testing pre-existing election law to see how much federal intervention can occur. Traugott notes that any actions taken by the administration could be challenged in court and potentially reach the Supreme Court.
The US Constitution assigns states the power to determine the “times, places and manner” of elections for federal office. Congress has the ability to make or alter rules related to voting through legislation or constitutional amendments. However, Trump’s statements have blurred the lines between federal and state power, sparking concerns from voting rights groups.
Despite Trump’s claims, voter fraud is exceedingly rare in the US, with isolated instances typically having little effect on election outcomes. The Heritage Foundation has documented a low rate of voter fraud since 1982.
