Trumps Anti-War Vows Undermined During First Year in Office

US President Donald Trump’s Campaign Pledges Under Fire as Democrats Target Affordability and Foreign Policy

One year into his second term, US President Donald Trump is facing criticism from Democratic leaders over his campaign pledges. The party has long emphasized affordability as a key issue in the upcoming 2026 midterms, with the goal of reclaiming both chambers of Congress from Republicans.

In recent weeks, Trump’s military pressure campaign against Venezuela and his efforts to take control of Greenland have emerged as major concerns for Democrats. On January 3, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was abducted by US forces, and since then, military assets have remained stationed off the coast of Venezuela.

At a news conference, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed “relentless” messaging on affordability in the year ahead. He stated that Democrats are focused on lowering costs and addressing affordability issues. In contrast, Schumer claimed that Republicans led by Trump are prioritizing military adventurism overseas.

The Democratic National Committee has also taken issue with Trump’s foreign policy, stating that he promised peace but delivered war. The party is seeking to highlight the cost of these actions to American taxpayers.

Former Senator Sherrod Brown noted that Democrats should focus on improving the lives of Ohioans rather than Caracas. However, experts argue that Trump’s brand of politics relies heavily on connecting his actions abroad to everyday life for US voters.

Trump has increased his scorecard on international adventurism in recent weeks, including bombing campaigns in Yemen, Iran, Nigeria, Somalia, and the Caribbean. Military assets remain stationed off the coast of Venezuela, with plans to use US troops to secure the country’s oil wealth.

Experts warn that the relative stability under interim President Delcy Rodriguez remains tenuous, and the prospect of greater entanglement remains a concern. Trump has stated his commitment to establishing US “preeminence” in the West.
