Cuba’s President Denounces US Tariff Threat as “Fascist, Criminal and Genocidal”
Havana, Cuba - Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has condemned a recent executive order signed by US President Donald Trump, which threatens additional tariffs on countries that sell oil to the island. The order, issued on Thursday, alleges that the government of communist-run Cuba poses an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to US national security.
In a social media post on Friday, Diaz-Canel described the move as an attempt by Trump to “suffocate” Cuba’s economy through tariffs imposed on countries trading oil with it. He also accused Trump of revealing his true intentions, which he claims are driven by personal interests rather than the needs of the American people.
The US has taken control of Venezuela’s oil sector following a military operation in Caracas earlier this month, resulting in fuel shortages and rolling electricity blackouts in Cuba. The country is currently facing severe economic difficulties, with many residents struggling to access basic goods and services.
Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez has declared an “international emergency” in response to the US move, which he claims violates international law and global commerce principles. Venezuela’s government has also condemned the measure, stating that it violates international law.
Residents of Havana have expressed anger at Trump’s tariff threat, citing its impact on their daily lives. Many are struggling with food shortages and power outages, with some describing the situation as a “war”. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced plans to seek alternative suppliers for Cuba’s fuel needs following Trump’s announcement.
