US and Israel Continue Military Operations in Iran Conflict
The conflict between the United States and Iran entered its fourth week on Saturday, with President Donald Trump issuing a statement that the US is “winding down” its military operations in Iran. However, just hours later, Trump threatened to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.
The Iranian government has continued to retaliate against Israel and Gulf countries despite weeks of air strikes, and has imposed a de facto blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. This has led to an increase in oil prices globally. Analysts have warned that the conflict risks unleashing a global recession.
Trump’s administration has taken steps to ease the energy crisis by allowing the sale of sanctioned Russian oil. However, efforts to pressure allies to police the strait have been unsuccessful so far.
The US military has carried out heavy bombardments of Iran’s coast, including with bunker buster bombs, but still has not been able to limit Tehran’s capacity to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian leaders have consistently denied reaching out to the US with a ceasefire offer.
On Saturday, Trump claimed that the US had “blown Iran off of the map” and insisted that he had met his own goals for the conflict, which include completely degrading Iran’s missile capability, destroying its defense industrial base, eliminating the Iranian navy and air force, and protecting Middle Eastern allies. However, these claims have been disputed by analysts and US military officials.
The situation remains fluid, with Trump’s administration announcing that it is sending three more warships to the Middle East with about 2,500 additional Marines. The US military has deployed approximately 50,000 personnel for the conflict against Iran.
