Trumps Unchecked Power Has Significantly Impacted Global Politics and Governance

US President Donald Trump’s Actions Raise Questions About International Law and Global Governance

In his second presidential term, US President Donald Trump has taken several actions that have raised concerns among international law experts about the effectiveness of global governance institutions. Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has ordered two unprovoked attacks on independent states, Venezuela and Iran, and threatened to annex Greenland. He has also strained traditional alliances with Europe and undermined the United Nations.

Trump’s approach to international relations appears to be guided by a vision of power limited only by his “own morality,” according to reports. However, this approach has led to criticism that he is disregarding established norms and institutions.

Experts say that Trump’s actions have breached international law and the UN Charter, particularly in relation to the use of force under Article 2(4). The US Constitution’s system of checks and balances is also being tested as Trump exercises significant power without apparent restraint.

Some experts argue that international law has historically served US interests and should continue to do so. However, they note that finding value in international law often requires a long-term outlook that may not align with short-term political agendas.

The United Nations has been criticized for its inability to effectively constrain Trump’s actions. While the UN has sought to promote dialogue and provide a global response to international challenges, Trump’s relationship with the organization has been strained. He has attempted to supplant the UN with his own initiatives, such as the Board of Peace, and has undermined UN aid efforts in Gaza.

Despite these criticisms, some countries have been reluctant to criticize Trump publicly due to concerns about potential backlash from the US president. This has allowed Trump to sidestep criticism from the UN when he wants to, while occasionally using the organization for instrumental purposes.

The situation with Iran remains uncertain, and it is unclear whether Trump’s actions will be successful or falter.
