Turkish Authorities Detain Over 100 Suspects Linked to ISIL in Nationwide Raids
Turkish authorities have detained more than 100 individuals suspected of ties to ISIL (ISIS) as part of a nationwide operation. The operation, announced by Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya on Wednesday morning, targeted suspects across 25 provinces, including Ankara.
According to Yerlikaya, the arrests were made in response to intelligence indicating that ISIL operatives were planning attacks in Turkey during the holiday season. The operation is the third major crackdown on suspected ISIL members in less than a week.
On Tuesday, Turkish police clashed with suspected ISIL members in Yalova, resulting in the deaths of three officers and six suspects. A day later, 357 additional suspects were arrested in a coordinated effort by security forces.
Turkish authorities have reported increased activity from ISIL sleeper cells during the holiday period, a time when the group has previously staged attacks in the country. Intelligence suggests that ISIL operatives are targeting non-Muslims in particular.
The group remains active in Syria, where it shares a 900-kilometre border with Turkey. The US military has conducted extensive strikes against ISIL in central and northeastern Syria this month, killing or capturing approximately 25 fighters from the group.
Turkish authorities have stated that they will continue to take measures to counter ISIL activity, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining national security.
