Three students and one teacher have been killed in an attack at a middle school in the Kahramanmaras province of Turkey, according to Governor Mukerrem Unluer. The incident occurred on Wednesday, with the attacker shooting four people dead and injuring at least 20 others.
The governor stated that the shooter was a student in the eighth grade who used guns belonging to his father, a former police officer. The student concealed the weapons in a backpack and entered two classrooms, firing randomly. Footage released by the IHA private news agency showed an ambulance arriving with a person being evacuated, as well as tearful parents at the scene.
Police have increased security around the school building, and four of the injured are in serious condition and undergoing surgery. The Justice Minister has launched an investigation into the shooting. Al Jazeera’s Sineom Koseoglu reported that the public is seeking answers about how the young boy accessed his father’s guns and whether authorities will improve gun control measures.
This incident marks Turkey’s second school attack in two days, following a high school shooting in Sanliurfa province on Tuesday. The previous shooting resulted in 16 injuries and one death.
