Twelve people killed in recent Israeli strikes on Lebanese territory

At least 12 people have been killed in southern Lebanon, including a child, as Israeli forces continue to carry out strikes despite an ongoing ceasefire. On Friday, at least eight people were killed in Habboush, a village in the Nabatieh district, and at least eight others were wounded, including another child and a woman. The Lebanese Civilian Defence has been searching through the rubble of air strikes that destroyed a residential neighborhood.

According to reports from Al Jazeera’s Obaida Hitto, footage from the area shows “dramatic” scenes with buildings completely flattened. Similar attacks have occurred in at least six other locations in southern Lebanon, including women and children. Four more people were reported killed in separate attacks near Tyre and Nabatieh.

Israel has also demolished houses, a convent, and a school on Friday. The military issued a forced evacuation order to residents in Habboush before strikes struck the village. A day earlier, Israel attacked the town without warning.

The death toll since hostilities began on March 2 stands at 2,618 people killed and 8,094 wounded, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health’s Emergency Operations Center. The US-brokered ceasefire has been extended to May 17, but violence continues despite this agreement. Israel claims its attacks target the pro-Iran Lebanese group Hezbollah, while Hezbollah has continued to carry out attacks on Israeli forces and vehicles.

Israel occupies parts of southern Lebanon, which it calls a buffer zone. The conflict began in October 2023, with Israel intensifying its attacks in September 2024, killing the movement’s leader Hassan Nasrallah. A ceasefire followed in November 2024, but was violated by Israel over 10,000 times before Hezbollah resumed attacks on March 2.
