Two French women die during attempted crossing of English Channel

Two women believed to be from Sudan have died after a boat carrying 82 people ran aground near Calais, France. The incident occurred on Sunday when the engine failed and the vessel began drifting at sea. Seventeen people were rescued and taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The remaining 65 individuals on board eventually came ashore on a beach in Neufchatel-Hardelot, approximately 12km south of Boulogne-sur-Mer. The victims were found deceased inside the boat. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the deaths.

Thirteen people with moderate injuries and three with serious wounds, including burn victims, were taken to hospital for treatment. They will be interviewed by border police to identify those responsible for attempting to cross the English Channel.

This incident highlights the challenges faced by France and Britain in addressing small boat crossings. In recent months, there have been several reported deaths of migrants attempting to reach the UK via the English Channel. According to official sources, at least 29 people died at sea in the region in 2025.

A border security deal between France and Britain has been implemented, with funding contingent on results. The agreement includes increased police presence along the coast and a reduction in migrant arrivals in Britain this year compared to 2025.
