A Shooting Incident Occurs at Old Dominion University in Virginia
A shooting incident occurred at Old Dominion University in Virginia on Thursday morning, resulting in two people being hospitalized in critical condition. The gunman opened fire shortly before 10:49am local time (14:49 GMT) in Constant Hall, the center of the university’s college of business.
According to authorities, the suspect was found dead following the shooting, although the circumstances surrounding their death are currently unclear. The identity of the suspect has not been released.
In an emergency alert, the university confirmed that the shooter had opened fire and immediately canceled classes for the remainder of Thursday. Authorities have stated that there is no longer an active threat on campus.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has agents on scene supporting the investigation. Governor Abigail Spanberger has also been monitoring the situation, stating that her administration remains in close contact with local emergency responders as state support is being mobilized to assist ODU and Norfolk.
According to data from advocacy groups, gun violence in the US has remained high compared to other Western countries. In 2025, there were at least 110 people shot per day in the US. This incident marks the latest in a series of shootings on university campuses, with at least 19 instances reported since 2026.
The ATF and local authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, while hospital authorities monitor the condition of the two victims.
