Two people have been shot by federal agents in Portland, Oregon, according to reports from the local police department. The incident occurred on Southeast Main Street at approximately 2:18pm local time (22:18 GMT). Emergency responders were called to the scene after one of the shooting victims reported being injured.
The Portland Police Department confirmed that two individuals, a man and a woman, had been found with apparent gunshot wounds near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside. Medical personnel were summoned, and both victims were transported to a hospital for treatment. The current condition of the victims is unknown.
A statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s local office confirmed that Customs and Border Patrol agents were involved in the incident. The FBI stated that the shooting was part of an ongoing investigation led by their agency.
Portland Police Chief Bob Day released a statement urging calm, saying “We are still in the early stages of this incident.” Mayor Keith Wilson also expressed solidarity with Minneapolis, where a similar incident occurred earlier in the day, resulting in the death of Renee Nicole Good. The mayor’s office issued a statement condemning the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents involved in Good’s shooting.
The Trump administration has framed Good’s shooting as an act of self-defense by the ICE agent involved. However, video footage appears to show Good attempting to maneuver her vehicle away from federal officers.
