Military Operation Results in Fatalities in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province
A security forces convoy was targeted by a vehicle carrying an explosive-laden motorcycle in Bannu district, KP province, on Saturday. The incident resulted in the deaths of two soldiers, including a lieutenant colonel, according to the Pakistani military.
The operation also led to the deaths of at least five armed fighters, including one described as a suicide bomber. According to the military, the bomber was stopped by security personnel, preventing an attack on civilians and law enforcement personnel.
The Pakistani military referred to the fighters as “khawarij,” a term used for banned groups, including Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Islamabad has accused the Taliban administration in Kabul of providing refuge to TTP members. However, Kabul has denied these allegations.
The incident occurred in an area that has seen frequent armed violence in recent years. Security officials have reported strikes on police installations, suicide bombings, and armed assaults in Bannu district. A surge in armed rebel group activity across KP was reported after the TTP ended a ceasefire with the government in late 2022.
In a statement, the Pakistani military vowed to continue operations against those responsible for the attack, citing “justified retribution” against khawarij. The statement also acknowledged the sacrifices made by security personnel and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to safeguarding its nation at all costs.
