UAEs Fujairah Hit in Monday Attack Raises Questions About Significance

UAE Accuses Iran of Launching Missile and Drone Attacks on Fujairah Port

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has accused Iran of launching a barrage of missiles and drones at the port of Fujairah, injuring three Indian nationals and setting an oil refinery ablaze. The UAE’s Ministry of Defence reported that its air defences engaged 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and four drones launched from Iran on Monday.

According to Iranian state television, military officials attributed the attacks to “US military adventurism”. Fujairah is a major port in the UAE, located approximately 130km east of Dubai. The port serves as a terminus for the Habshan-Fujairah oil pipeline, which carries about 1.5 million barrels of oil per day.

On April 6, authorities in Fujairah reported an incident involving a drone approaching from Iran towards a telecommunications company building. No injuries were reported at that time. The port also handles general cargo, dry bulk, and container services, making it a significant global hub for ship refuelling.

US President Trump announced on Monday that US forces would begin escorting stranded ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been closed since February 28 due to Iran’s threats to attack ships. The closure of the strait has led to increased oil prices and concerns about a global recession and food crisis.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack as “unacceptable” and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Iranian authorities released a map showing an expanded maritime area under their control, sparking fears of further regional conflict.
