The US Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), alleging that the university’s administration failed to address antisemitic acts during pro-Palestinian protests. The lawsuit claims that UCLA created a “hostile work environment” for Jewish and Israeli workers amid protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The complaint, filed on Tuesday, alleges that UCLA administrators allowed virulent anti-Semitism to flourish on campus, harming students and staff alike. The lawsuit cites the Palestinian solidarity protests that unfolded on UCLA’s campus after the start of Israel’s war on Gaza.
According to the Justice Department’s complaint, the “general atmosphere of antisemitism” at UCLA was so severe and pervasive that it constituted a “hostile work environment” under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The lawsuit seeks to hold UCLA accountable for violating this law.
The allegations come as part of a broader campaign by the Trump administration to crack down on campuses hosting large pro-Palestinian protests. Critics have accused the administration of seeking to suppress free speech and silence activists who disagree with its views.
In response to the lawsuit, Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that “based on our investigation, UCLA administrators allegedly allowed virulent anti-Semitism to flourish on campus.” The lawsuit marks the latest example of this campaign, which has seen universities facing pressure to align with the administration’s priorities.
The Trump administration has long accused pro-Palestinian activists of creating an unsafe learning environment. However, many protest organizers have refuted these allegations, stating that their mission was to highlight human rights abuses perpetrated by the Israeli government in Gaza.
